Suffering from empty nest syndrome, two lonely parents concoct a scheme to get their kids interested in them again: they pretend they’ve won the lottery.

This bright domestic drama captures a moment in time when, for a large number of idealistic and grateful French men and women, the promise of Russian communism was bright, and everything Russian was a source of joy and amazement. In the story, Irene was rescued from Auschwitz by soldiers from the U.S.S.R., and since that time she has enthusiatically considered Russia to be the source of hope in the world. Her more pragmatic husband has, by 1958, grown somewhat weary of her enthusiasm, which has led her to decorate their apartment with anything Russian she can get her hands on. Matters come to a head when she is befriended by three members of the Red Army Choir during their tour of Paris.

Simona is a single mother in her early ‘40s who is wholly devoted to her son, Filippo. To get over her insecurities as a parent and make her son happy on his eighth birthday, she decides to throw him a birthday party in their small flat and invite over his school friends and their parents. For Simona, this birthday is about to pose quite the surprising dilemma between allowing her son to embrace his true self and a mother’s fierce desire to protect her child from their potentially cruel surroundings. This is the last conundrum she was expecting to have to face on a day that is already rife with anxiety.

More and more parents take competitive behavior towards the teachers of their children: deny votes and programs, vaneggiano of likes, dislikes, and conspiracies. So, instead of helping in the training of their children, they become insurmountable obstacles to their growth. Presumptuously they think: “We know better than anyone else our children and we know what they are worth and how and what you have to teach.”

Trying to make a professional impression, the teacher of the 9th grade Dārta organises a parents’ school meeting, but the parents’ childish behaviour turns the gathering into a disaster, becoming the biggest challenge of Dārta’s career so far. The new teacher prepares for the meeting, while the parents arrive late – so does the businessman Jānis, the president of the parent’s school council Žanete arrives with flowers and a gift; the spouses of an open marriage Valts and Laine playing “truth or dare”, while the recently divorced Maija and Raivo exchange barbs. The planning of the children’s graduation turns into an absurd escalation of conflicts between the parents.
